These changes all came about in the summer of 2014. As long as you provide an affidavit that attests to your commitment to each other, you are able to serve together. Other reforms include a more transparent application timeline and you are now able to serve with your significant other without having to be married.
The whole process from application to departure now takes an average of 3-6 months with the old program the process took 9-18 months. The application now only takes about an hour to complete, whereas the old application took an average of 8-10 hours to complete. For those of you considering the Peace Corps, you may already know that applicants can now choose the programs and countries they want to apply to, compared to the old process where your program and country were chosen for you. These reforms have streamlined the process, making the application faster, simpler, and more personalized for future applicants.
Since completing our application, the Peace Corps has gone through quite an overhaul with their application process in an effort to boost application numbers. Though finding the application a bit redundant and wearisome, we took it seriously and put a lot of effort into it as we were fully committed at this point and willing to put our best foot forward to ensure our acceptance into the program. Melodrama aside, Aaron and I did very quickly realize this was serious business after taking a look at the application back in August 2013. Reader, you will be glad to hear that I did not include “melodramatic” in my résumé for the Peace Corps as that asset never really helps anyone except for an amateur blogger who wants a colorful introduction to a blog post. Known as the first hurdle that one must go through in the Peace Corps application process, I contemplate my sanity as I willingly continue this application, fully aware of the many hurdles to come. It has been three weeks since I began this 60-page document and I am finding it hard to come up with yet another synonym for “hard working” as the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome creeps into my wrist. My tired fingertips flutter across the keyboard, desperate to finally finish the last essay of my Peace Corps application. My bloodshot eyes stare at the computer screen as a mild yet constant twitch develops in my right eyelid.
